A boilermaker with over three decades worth of first-hand experience, Joe Dwyer saw a need to create a company which could grow to serve the needs of a variety of industries, including mining and oil and gas. Today, the Western Australia-based business has expanded to provide a comprehensive range of first and second-tier services, products, and expertise to companies such as Rio Tinto, Leighton, BHP Billiton, Chevron, Woodside, and many others.

That was in 1999, and in the years since, Dwyer Engineering & Construction has grown to 100 full-time staff, and has expanded its capabilities from fabrication to include surface treatment, design, detailing, shop drawings, painting, transportation and delivery, installation, a range of maintenance and minor works services including incentivised long-term contracts, and a good deal more.

Providing a diverse range of services has not only helped establish the company’s solid reputation for professionalism, quality, and timely delivery, but has enabled it to act as a “one stop shop” to meet the needs of all its oil, gas, mining, power, mineral processing, processing, and infrastructure and manufacturing industry clients across WA.

“What we do differently compared to everyone else is that we do everything, the whole product,” says Mattias Eriksson, who serves as the company’s Business Manager, has been with Dwyer Engineering & Construction for the past eight years, and who holds a Masters in Engineering (Mechanical) and vast experience in project management. “We do the detailing of the drawings, we do the fabrication all in-house, we do the surface treatment in-house – we probably have the third largest surface treatment facility in WA – and we do the transport and the installation ourselves. From a client’s perspective, instead of going to five or six different companies when they want a project done they can come to us, and we get the whole lot done, from start to finish.”

With such a broad service offering, the team at the multi-disciplined company – solely owned by Joe Dwyer – is able to provide everything from detailing to mechanical and structural fabrication, pipe spooling, maintenance, test assembly, high quality painting, transport, and mechanical and structural erection. “If our competitors quote the same packages as us, they have to go and rely on so many other people,” comments Mr Eriksson. By coming to Dwyer Engineering & Construction, companies no longer need to spend time and money searching out individual companies to handle their projects, or face the uncertainty that comes with working with a new operation for the first time.

Fully Equipped Workshops

Along with its team of highly skilled specialists, Dwyer Engineering & Construction is highly equipped for structural steel fabrication. With a purpose-built facility in Harvey, WA, south of Perth, the company utilises three workshops, and has a layout which includes a 2000 square metre workshop with heavy overhead cranes, a large assembly and laydown area externally, a 150 square metre state of the art blast booth, and a 1500 square metre fully covered paint shed.

The company is fully equipped with an array of the latest equipment, including modern CNC automatic beam line and angle processing machines, and is able to fabricate approximately 100 tonnes of structural steel each week. In recent years, the company has also invested in two state of the art beam line machines, which drill, stamp, and cope beams, columns and channels with extremely high precision. In fact, every piece of work created by Dwyer is custom-made for the job to exacting specifications, and serves as a reflection of the company’s long-standing commitment to its customers through quality and innovation.

“At Dwyer, we believe it is crucial to invest in new machines and technologies to create high quality products and to make everything as efficient as possible,” says Mr Eriksson. “In our industry, we’re not doing mass production; every single piece we do is different.”

Being able to provide clients with turnkey solutions has earned the company new and repeat business over the past 14 years. Multi-disciplined and certified to AS/NZS ISO9001:2000 since 2005, Dwyer Engineering & Construction addresses all projects with the utmost in professionalism, while making every effort to create quality, reasonably priced solutions for all clients and prevent interface issues which may occur with multitier sub-contracts.

In addition to fabricating a range of custom-designed and engineered products for Australia’s oil, gas and mining sectors, the company is often called upon for its expertise repairing the work of others. In one instance, Dwyer had to fix a number of massive trusses which were made incorrectly overseas; this included picking them up, bringing them back to Dwyer’s facilities in Harvey WA, repairing the trusses, and transporting them back again.

At Dwyer, quality control is second to none, since the company refuses to settle for second-best. “We’ve got massive, different checks,” states Mr Eriksson of the business’ commitment to QA, which is all performed in-house. “Every piece gets checked three or four times before it goes to the client.”

Range of Services and Products

From detailing to fabrication, painting to maintenance, and delivery to installation, Dwyer has an occupational health and safety system reflective of the company’s desire to provide safe work environments which not only meet but exceed the expectations of compliance with regulations and contract conditions.

In all areas of the company, safety, precision and attention to detail are paramount, and these values are reflected in the company’s many successful projects, such as Alcoa Pinjarra, the Argyle Diamond Mine, Cloud Break, Mount Whaleback, the Harvey Pipe Project, jetty upgrades, and the Binningup Desalination Plant, to name a few.

Currently, Dwyer is engaged on the second stage of the Binningup Desalination Plant. At $12 million, it is the largest project the team has undertaken to date in terms of value. Located in Binningup WA, the first stage ran from 2010 to 2011. Dwyer Engineering & Construction has carried out detailing, fabrication, surface treatment, transport and site installation of approximately 1,600 tonnes of steel, and had a crew on site for six months erecting steel, which was fabricated and painted in the company’s own workshops.

At present, the company is working on a Jetty Upgrade in Cape Lambert, WA, for client John Holland, and is responsible for fabrication and surface treatment of Holland’s jetty upgrade in Cape Lambert. “They are one of our biggest clients at the moment,” says Mr Eriksson. “We are doing a lot of work for them, and we supply them with labour hire as well.”

Working in a variety of industries over the years, mining has been a key sector for the past decade, and the company is now seeing significant growth in oil and gas. “We are a first-tier contractor when it comes to mining, but not yet in oil and gas,” explains Mr Eriksson. Competing against overseas suppliers, the company is proudly Australian-owned, and dedicated to using locals whenever possible. “We are a company that others want to work with, and a preferred supplier – it really is as simple as that.”

Call it ‘domotics,’ and you are likely to receive a blank stare, but refer to it as ‘smart home’ or ‘home automation,’ and you will get a nod of acknowledgement. For the past few years, consumers have heard the word ‘smart’ attached to countless products and services, from food and drink to snacks like popcorn and mobile phones, which no one seems to refer to as a ‘cellphone’ anymore. Yet what, exactly, constitutes ‘smart’?
