Australia’s Underground City
The South Australian town lies along a barren stretch of outback halfway between Adelaide and Alice Springs. Four thousand residents from 45 different countries have been drawn to the desolate settlement by a cache of precious opal lurking somewhere beneath the surface. These hidden gems are every bit as enticing – and elusive – as a pirate’s treasure from the pages of an old fashioned adventure novel.
The Pyramids as Project
Humans are amazing story tellers. We live and thrive on ideas and beliefs because they have the tendency to make life just a little more exciting. There’s always something mystical to look forward to and there is always some incredible story to look back on while thinking to ourselves, ‘wow that’s interesting.’
Projecting Expertise
The Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) is the peak body for project management in Australia. Formed in 1976, it has been instrumental in progressing the profession of project management in Australia over the past 30 to 35 years.
Avoiding the Building Bureaucracy
Rob Ware is Managing Director of the Australian operation, which is based in South Melbourne, and he told us more about the business. His fellow director Peter Richter (founder of the Australian company and still a consultant to it) still has considerable business in Indonesia and as far afield as Japan, but the bulk of work is within this country. “We are not a huge international corporation,” Mr Ware says.
In The Business of People
TSA attributes its success to its ability to attract and retain the best people. The company’s mantra is simple – good people that take ownership of their projects will deliver good outcomes. Regardless of the sector or the size of the project, the TSA team works collaboratively with clients and project teams in a way that encourages innovation and improves project outcomes. TSA’s business philosophies mirror those of its clients – the delivery of high value, outcome focused services in a cost effective and timely manner.
Fourth Generation Ethics
At the beginning, T C Clarke & Son was already ranging far and wide across Queensland, as far up as Ayr, where one building completed during the period is now listed with the Queensland Heritage Register. As Geoff Clarke told us recently, “he was doing both residential and commercial work. We used to do a majority of work for banks around the countryside and did a lot of rural work.” Morris, Geoff’s father, joined Thomas prior to WWII as an apprentice and the team built numerous landmarks.
Rising to the Sporting Challenge
Also administered by the Trust is the adjacent Sydney Football Stadium, currently known for reasons of naming rights as the Allianz Stadium. This 45,500-seater takes care of the needs of the city’s more rectangular sports: rugby league and union, and now soccer. Either venue can accommodate a wide variety of diverse entertainments such as concerts, although Allianz Stadium predominates in this area.
Moving For Change, and For the Better
MoveCorp emerged on the scene nearly twenty-four years ago, the creation of Ken Tuckey, a Logistics and Intelligence expert for the Australian Navy. At the time, the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) had fifteen live broadcasting studios operating twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. A project committee, planning the relocation of the television and radio company, headhunted Mr Tuckey in the hopes of avoiding downtime during the resettlement.
Pride in the Work
Just how successful can any business possibly be if it is not marketing itself? Typically, any business has a portion of its monies set aside to invest in advertising because it needs to get the word out about its product and name. Very rarely can a company survive or thrive without it. John McDonald Building Services is that rare entity. The company specialises in many areas of construction, ranging from designer homes to construction surveying, project management and supervision, interior design, decoration and urban planning. Even heritage sites are not beyond its scope.
It’s Your Home
A home buyer, on the other hand, is more interested in a permanent place – somewhere they can hang many hats. Oftentimes this is a couple or a young family who has been renting their hat racks for a few years and have decided that they feel stable enough to purchase a beautiful, permanent dwelling on their own little chunk of the planet.
