ABCC Releases Sham Contracting Inquiry Report
At the end of November, The Office of the Australian Building and Construction Commissioner (ABCC) released its long-awaited Sham Contracting Inquiry Report 2011. The result of an extensive year-long Inquiry spearheaded by the ABCC, the detailed report is the culmination of 21 written submissions and five roundtable discussions with building and construction industry participants around Australia. According to the ABCC, “Sham contracting occurs when an employer attempts to disguise an employment relationship as an independent contracting relationship, to avoid obligatory rates of pay and other entitlements, and gain an unfair competitive advantage.” Over the years, the ABCC has played a […]
First Section of Nagambie Bypass Opens to Traffic
Almost two years to the day since construction commenced, a section of the new Nagambie Bypass has opened to traffic. The long-awaited bypass – scheduled to be completed by mid-2012 – will result in almost 2,000 trucks no longer rumbling through the heart of Nagambie daily, much to the relief of area residents. “The progress that has been made in the last two years vindicates our decision to bring forward funding in our recession-busting, job-creating Economic Stimulus Plan and begin construction of the bypass earlier than originally planned,” said Anthony Albanese, Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister. The unveiling of Stage […]
$6.76 Million Solar Farm Gets Go-Ahead
The Queensland Government recently named Ingenero Pty Ltd as the top tender for the construction of a massive new solar farm to be built at Cloncurry, east of Mount Isa. The company was one of 19 tendering for the job, which will include the design, construction, and operation of the $6.76 million, 2.128 megawatt project. “Having been selected as preferred tenderer, our task now is to finalise the contract negotiations with the Queensland Government and the Cloncurry Shire Council so the solar farm can be built by the end of 2012,” said Rodger Whitby, Ingenero General Manager of Generation. “After […]
Construction a Winner in Third Quarter
Figures for the latest quarter reveal company operating profits rose 4.8 per cent, with Australia’s construction sector emerging as one of the clear leaders. According to numbers released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for the third quarter ending in September, gross operating profits – in current prices and seasonally adjusted terms – rose by 8.8 per cent over the year, higher than estimated by economists. While there was a slight decrease in business inventories in seasonally adjusted chain volume terms of 1.1 per cent, other estimates for income from sales by wholesalers in the third quarter increased 2.2 […]
New Mall, Shopping Centre Upgrade in Wollongong
Over the next two years, Wollongong’s central business district (CBD) will see major construction, including the recently announced $200 million West Keira complex from The GPT Group, and anticipated works on the Crown Street Shopping Mall upgrade, expected to begin next year. With construction on the West Keira complex slated for the next 24 months, some on The Illawarra Business Chamber believe it is time to re-evaluate the Crown Street Shopping Mall upgrades, saying the present plan needs retooling. “It’s going to be a long time between mall revamps or rebuilds, and therefore we need to get this right and […]
Christchurch City Council faces Potential Boycott
In Christchurch, local residents – many of whom are still unable to occupy homes damaged in the devastating 22 February earthquake – are questioning the wisdom of council rates on properties they cannot use, and want them scrapped. Hundreds of home still remain inaccessible and were deemed uninhabitable in the months following the quake due to the risk of collapse, landslide, or rockfall. As a result, many people are living in rented accommodations, paying rates through their rent, and questioning why they should be required to also pay for earthquake-damaged homes they are unable to live in. Although The Christchurch […]
Housing Market Slows in Some Areas
In some parts of Australia, homes are selling at a brisk pace. In others, however, the market has slowed to a point where some houses are taking literally twice as long to sell as they did just one year ago. One of the reasons for the slow sales is over-supply of houses. At the present time, over 311,000 properties are listed for sale, an increase of 30 per cent from 2010. In some locations, the numbers are even higher, such as in Melbourne, which is seeing 50 per cent more properties for sale, and Sydney, with a jump of 30 […]
Protector Alsafe
Safety is something that can neither be understated nor undersold. At Protector Alsafe, there is a culture that the safety message begins at home, and all its own staff receive regular and ongoing training in safety matters for such a diverse range of industries and hazards that it would take the full space of this article to list them. But if we just mention that the headgear range alone encompasses not just the regular series of hard hats, brow guards, face visors but beanies, straw hats, sun-hats and a rather fetching Drover’s hat, you will be able to gauge that the company likes to leave nothing at all to chance.
