Government Moves to Restrict Union Activities

In Victoria, the Government is aiming to restrict a number of union activities on construction sites, and to change how unions operate on state-funded construction projects. Citing union action on some projects as being the reason for delays and cost overruns, the Government is looking at factors to prevent construction costs from skyrocketing and ensure projects are completed on time. These include banning unions from compelling workers to join, greater abilities on the part of Government inspectors to access construction sites, and demanding construction firms tendering for Government contracts deal with unlawful union actions without delay. Examples of recent costly […]

Construction Activity Continues to Slump

Recent figures from The Australian Industry Group, Housing Industry Association revealed the nation’s construction index performed poorly, and is the weakest it has been in 31 months. The fall of 2.1 index points to 30.0 points in September makes it the 16th consecutive monthly fall for Australia’s construction industry, with factors like a lack of consumer and investor confidence being cited as reasons for the slide. Of the four industry sub-sectors, only engineering contracted at a slower rate, with the others showing sharp declines. The continual decline has led some experts to state that lowering interest rates would help to […]

Boom in Construction, Mining Sectors

At the Government’s Future Jobs Forum earlier this month, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard was upbeat, stating that the nation’s growth in mining-related construction is just at the beginning. “We haven’t seen the construction boom associated with mining really start to roll out in its major phase yet,” said the Prime Minister at the Forum. Reasons cited for increased employment in mining and construction include record capital spending and investment in Australia’s resources sectors and a strong Australian dollar. Despite the optimism for ongoing growth in construction and resources, Gillard conceded that some of the nation’s sectors are facing challenging […]

In AU’s Housing Market, Location Beats Land

“Location, location, location!” We’ve all heard the old saying about the three most important words in a real estate agent’s vocabulary, but a recent survey shows that for Australian homebuyers, location is even more important than previously believed. According to a new survey, the ambition of Australians to have a house with a large lot and a garden comes far behind other features such as security and location, preferably close to friends and family. The recent survey of 706 households in Sydney and Melbourne, conducted by the Grattan Institute, reveals that the changing demographic of homeowners, such as single persons […]

Swan Bells

Perth’s downtown core, although a short distance from the Swan River, was once isolated, both physically and mentally, from this natural beauty. For years the City of Perth has planned and worked to bridge the gap between its centre of commerce and the potential centre of community found at the waterfront. This important project began more than a decade ago with the construction of the iconic Bell Tower at the heart of the Barrack Square Redevelopment. Sometimes referred to as Swan Bells, this tower houses the historic St Martin in the Fields bells, but also serves as a modern WA landmark and a symbol for Perth, drawing crowds to learn, relax, and socialise on the banks of the Swan River.

Home Automation

Call it ‘domotics,’ and you are likely to receive a blank stare, but refer to it as ‘smart home’ or ‘home automation,’ and you will get a nod of acknowledgement. For the past few years, consumers have heard the word ‘smart’ attached to countless products and services, from food and drink to snacks like popcorn and mobile phones, which no one seems to refer to as a ‘cellphone’ anymore. Yet what, exactly, constitutes ‘smart’?
